  • Confession & Forgiveness

P: In the Name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit
C: Amen. Matthew 28:19

P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify Your holy name, through
Jesus Christ, our Lord:
C: Amen

P: Beloved in the Lord: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is
not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
P: Most merciful God,
C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have
sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by
what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, we have
not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.
P: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, and for
His sake, He forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church
of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all

Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever, Amen.

The First Reading: Isaiah 26:1-4; 8-9; 12-13; 19-21

1 In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city; he
sets up salvation as walls and bulwarks. 2 Open the gates, that the righteous nation
that keeps faith may enter in. 3 You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed
on you, because he trusts in you. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an
everlasting rock. 8 In the path of your judgments, O Lord, we wait for you; your name
and remembrance are the desire of our soul. 9 My soul yearns for you in the night; my
spirit within me earnestly seeks you. For when your judgments are in the earth, the
inhabitants of the world learn righteousness. 12 O LORD, you will ordain peace for us,
for you have indeed done for us all our works. 13 O LORD our God, other lords besides
you have ruled over us, but your name alone we bring to remembrance. Your dead
shall live; their bodies shall rise. 19 You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy!
For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead. 20 Come, my
people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a
little while until the fury has passed by. 21 For behold, the LORD is coming out from
his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and the earth will
disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain.

L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God

Psalm 149
1 Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord | a new song;*
sing his praise in the congregation | of the faithful.
2 Let Israel rejoice | in his Maker;*
let the children of Zion be joyful | in their King.
3 Let them praise his name | in the dance;*
let them sing praise to him with tim- | brel and harp.
4 For the Lord takes pleasure | in his people*
and adorns the | poor with victory.

4

5 Let the faithful re- | joice in triumph;*
let them be joyful | on their beds.
6 Let the praises of God be | in their throat*
and a two-edged sword | in their hand;
7 To wreak vengeance | on the nations*
and punishment | on the peoples;
8 To bind their | kings in chains*
and their nobles with | links of iron;
9 To inflict on them the judg- | ment decreed;*
this is glory for all his faithful people. | Hallelujah!

The Second Reading: Revelation 7:2-17

2Then I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the
living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given
power to harm earth and sea, 3 saying, “Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees,
until we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads.” 4 And I heard the
number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel: 5 12,000
from the tribe of Judah were sealed, 12,000 from the tribe of Reuben, 12,000 from
the tribe of Gad, 6 12,000 from the tribe of Asher, 12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh, 7 12,000 from the tribe of Simeon, 12,000 from
the tribe of Levi, 12,000 from the tribe of Issachar, 8 12,000 from the tribe of
Zebulun, 12,000 from the tribe of Joseph, 12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were
sealed. 9 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number,
from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the
throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their
hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on
the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne
and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before
the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and
thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”
13 Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white
robes, and from where have they come?” 14 I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said
to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed

5

their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 “Therefore they are
before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits
on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 They shall hunger no more,
neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For
the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to
springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are
those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they shall
inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for
they shall be satisfied. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers,

  • Gospel Hymn: “For All Your Saints, O Lord” (verses 3-5) LBW # 176
Please remain standing for the Nicene Creed
  • The Nicene Creed Romans 10:9-10
All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
True God from true God, begotten, not made,
Of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
    For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven;
By the power of the Holy Spirit,
He became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man.
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.
    On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
    He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
Who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church

7

We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
