Palm Sunday of the Passion of our Lord
“Palm Sunday”
April 13th, 2025
The assembly gathers outside of the sanctuary’s front entrance. The service begins with the ringing of bells.
P: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord
C: Hosanna to the Son of David.
P: Mercifully assist us, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts whereby you have given us everlasting life, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C: Amen.
A: Hear the great story of our Lord Jesus Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem:
“The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!’ And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written: ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!’ His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, ‘You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.’” ~ John 12:12-19
* The Blessing of Palms
You are invited to raise your palms
P: The Lord be with you
C: And also with you.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.
P: We praise you and thank you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was acclaimed Son of David and King of kings by those who scattered their garments and branches of palms in his path. We ask that you bless these branches and those who bear them, and grant that we may evermore hail him as our Lord and King and follow him with perfect confidence: through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C: Amen.
A: Let us go forth in peace.
C: In the name of the Lord.
* Entrance Hymn: “All Glory, Laud, and Honor” LBW #108
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king.
To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the king of Israel and David’s royal Son.
Now in the Lord’s name coming, our King and Blessed One.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king.
To whom the lips of children make sweet hosannas ring.
The company of angels are praising you on high;
Creation and all mortals in chorus make reply.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king
To whom the lips of children make sweet hosannas ring.
The multitude of pilgrims with palms before you went
Our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king
To whom the lips of children make sweet hosannas.
To you, before your Passion, they sang their hymns of praise.
To you, now high exalted, our melody we raise.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king
To whom the lips of children make sweet hosannas ring.
Their praises you accepted; accept the prayers we bring
Great author of all goodness, O good and gracious King.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, redeemer king
To whom the lips of children make sweet hosannas ring.
When all have reached their places:
P: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
C: Hosanna in the highest.
*Kyrie (chanted)
P: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy Mark 10:47

C: Lord, have mercy
P: For the peace of the whole world, for the well being of the church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy
P: For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord.
C: Lord, have mercy
P: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

* Collect of the Day
P: The Lord be with you
C: And also with you.
P: We beseech You, Almighty God, to mercifully look upon Your people, that by Your great goodness we may be governed and preserved evermore, both in body and soul; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.
The First Reading: Deuteronomy 32:36-39
36 “For the Lord will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone and there is none remaining, bond or free. 37 Then he will say, ‘Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge, 38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you; let them be your protection! 39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.’”
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Psalm 118:19-29

I will enter them; I will offer thanks | to the Lord.
20 “This is the gate | of the Lord;*
he who is | righteous may enter.”
21 I will give thanks to you, for you | answered me*
and have become | my salvation.
22 The same stone which the build- | ers rejected*
Has become the chief | cornerstone.
23 This is | the Lord’s doing,*
and it is marvelous | in our eyes.
24 On this day the | Lord has acted;*
we will rejoice and be | glad in it.
25 Hosannah, | Lord, hosannah!*
Lord, send us | now success.
26 Blessed is he who comes in the name | of the Lord;*
We bless you from the house | of the Lord.
27 God is the Lord; he has | shined upon us;*
form a procession with branches up to the horns | of the altar.
28 “You are my God, and | I will thank you;*
you are my God, and I | will exalt you.”
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for | he is good;*
his mercy en- | dures forever.
All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the | Holy Spirit,*

P: Lord, you are just and your commandments are eternal. Teach us to love you with all our hearts and to love our neighbor as ourselves, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen.
The Epistle Reading: Philippians 2:5-11
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God
The Lord’s Passion according to Saint Luke
*The symbols in the following narrative represent:
N – Narrator
+ – Christ
S – Speakers (other than Christ)
P – The People
N: The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St. Luke.
N: Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put Jesus to death, for they feared the people. Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying,
+: Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.
N: They said to him,
S: Where will you have us prepare it?
N: He said to them,
+: Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters and tell the master of the house, ‘‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.”
N: And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. When the hour came, Jesus sat at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them:
+: I have greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. I tell you, I will not eat again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
N: Then taking a cup, he offered a blessing in thanks and said:
+: Take this and divide it among you; I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the coming of the reign of God.”
N: Then taking bread and giving thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying:
+: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.
N: In like manner he took the cup after supper, saying:
+: This cup is the new covenant in my blood which is shed for you. But behold: the hand of my betrayer is with me at this table. For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed.
N: They began to question one another as to which of them would do this. Then, a dispute arose among them about who would be regarded as the greatest. And Jesus said to them:
+: The kings of this world exercise lordship over their people; and those in authority over them are called their benefactors. But not so with you; rather let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For which is the greater, one who sits at table, or one who serves the meal? Is it not the one who sits at table? But I am among you as one who serves. You are those who have continued with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. Simon, Simon! Remember that Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat. But I have prayed that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brethren.
N: And he said to Jesus:
S: Lord, I am ready to go with you; to prison, and to death.
+: I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have three times denied that you know me.
N: Jesus then asked them:
+: When I sent you on a mission without a purse, or travel bag, or sandals, were you in need of anything?
N: And the disciples answered:
P: No, not a thing.
+: But now, the one who has a purse must carry it; likewise with a travel bag. And the one who is without a sword must sell his cloak and buy one. For this Scripture must be fulfilled: ‘And he was numbered among the wicked.’ This, I tell you, must come to fulfillment in me.
N: The disciples said to the Lord:
P: Lord, here are two swords.
+: It is enough.
N: And he came out, and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place he said to them:
+: Pray that you may not enter into temptation.
N: And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, then he knelt down and prayed:
+: Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet not my will be done, but yours.
N: An angel then appeared to him from heaven to strengthen him. And being in great agony, he prayed with even greater might, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow. And he said to them:
+: Why are you sleeping? Arise and pray, that you may not enter into temptation.
N: While he was still speaking, a crowd came, led by the man named Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said to him:
+: Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?
N: And when those who were with him saw what was going to take place, they said:
P: Lord, shall we strike with the sword?
N: One of them struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus said:
+: No more!
N: Then he touched the ear of the servant and healed him. Then, to those who had come out against him – the chief priests and the officers and the elders – Jesus said:
+: Have you come out against me like a criminal, with swords and clubs? When I was with you day after day in the Temple, you never raised a hand against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
N: They arrested him and led him away, bringing him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed them at a distance, and when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down, Peter sat among them. Then a servant girl, seeing Peter sitting in the light of the fire, said:
S: This man was with him!
N: But Peter denied it, saying:
S: Woman, I do not know him.
N: A little while later, someone else saw him and said:
S: You are also one of them!
N: But Peter denied it, saying:
S: No, I am not.
N: Then, after an hour had passed, another spoke more insistently:
S: This man was certainly with him, for he is a Galilean!
N: But Peter denied it, saying:
S: Sir, I do not know what you are saying.
N: And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked at Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, when he said to him, ‘The rooster will not crow today until you have three times denied that you know me.’ And Peter went out and wept bitterly. Now those who were holding Jesus mocked him and beat him. They also blindfolded him and asked:
P: Prophesy! Which one of us struck you?
N: And they spoke many other insulting words at him. Then, when day came, the assembly of the elders gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Jesus away to their council. Then they said:
P: If you are the Christ, tell us.
+: If I tell you, you will not believe; and if I ask you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.
P: Then are you the Son of God?
+: You say that I am.
N: Then the whole assembly rose up and said:
P: Why do we still need a witness? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.
N: They led Jesus before Pontius Pilate and started to accuse him, saying:
P: This man has been found perverting our nation, forbidding us to give tribute to Caesar, and calling himself Christ as a king.
N: Then Pilate asked Jesus:
S: Are you the king of the Jews?
N: And Jesus answered him:
+: You have said it.
N: Then Pilate reported to the chief priests and to the crowds, saying:
S: I do not find any crime in this man.
N: But they were insistent, saying:
P: He stirs up the people, teaching all throughout Judea, from Galilee to this very place.
N: When Pilate heard this, he asked whether this man was a Galilean. And when he learned that Jesus belonged to Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at the time. When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because Herod had heard about him, and he was hoping to see some sign done by him. So he questioned Jesus at some length; but he made no answer. The chief priests and the scribes stood by, accusing him insistently. And with his soldiers, Herod treated Jesus with contempt and mockery. Then, arraying Jesus in bright apparel, Herod sent him back to Pilate. And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day. Before this time, they had been enemies. Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them:
S: You have brought this man before me as one who was perverting the people, and after examining him before you, behold: I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him. Herod found no guilt either, for he sent him back to us. Therefore I will chastise him, then release him.
N: But the whole crowd cried out:
P: Away with this man, and release Barabbas to us instead.
N: Barabbas was a man who had been thrown into prison for causing an uprising in the city and for murder. Pilate addressed them once more, desiring to release Jesus. But they shouted out:
P: Crucify him, crucify him!
N: A third time, Pilate said to them:
S: Why? What evil has he committed? I have found no crime in him deserving death. Therefore I will chastise him, then release him.
N: But they demanded with louder cries:
P: Crucify him, crucify him!
Silence for meditation
N: So when their voices prevailed, Pilate passed sentence that their demand should be granted. He released the man who they had asked for, a man thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus up to their will. And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. And a great crowd of people followed him, and of women who bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning to them said,
+: Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me. But weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ And to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ If they do these things in the green wood, what will happen in the dry wood?
N: Two others who were criminals were also led along with him to be crucified. When they came to the place which was called the Skull, they crucified him and the other criminals: one on his right, and one on his left. And Jesus said,
+: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
N: And they cast lots to divide his garments. The people stood by watching, but the rulers mocked him, saying:
P: If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!
N: There was also an inscription over him that read, “This is the King of the Jews.” Then, one of the criminals began to rail against Jesus, saying:
S: Aren’t you the Christ? Then save yourself and us.
N: But the other rebuked him, saying:
S: Have you no fear of God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? We receive it justly as the due punishment for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.
N: And he said to Jesus:
S: Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
N: And Jesus said to him:
+: Truly I tell you, this day you will be with me in Paradise.
N: It was now about midday, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then, crying with a loud voice, Jesus said:
+: Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit.
N: And having said this, Jesus breathed his last. When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying:
S: Truly this was an innocent man.
N: And when the crowd of people who had gathered saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. And all of Jesus’s acquaintances and the women who had followed him from Galilee stood at a distance and saw these things. Now there was a man named Joseph from the Jewish town of Arimathea. He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man who had not been associated with their plot or their actions, and he was looking for the kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then he took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud, and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb, where no one had ever yet been laid. It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and, seeing the tomb, they saw how his body was laid. After this, they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath Day they rested according to the commandment.
N: This is the Passion of our Lord.
