P: In the Name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit
C: Amen. Matthew 28:19

P: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no
secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of Your Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify Your holy name, through
Jesus Christ, our Lord:
C: Amen

P: Beloved in the Lord: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is
not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
P: Most merciful God,
C: We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have
sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by
what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart, we have
not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have
mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways to the glory of your name. Amen.
P: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for us, and for
His sake, He forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church
of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all

First Reading: Malachi 3:13-18

13“Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. But you say, ‘How have we
spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of
our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? 15 And
now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the
test and they escape.’” 16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The
Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before
him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says
the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will
spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see
the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God
and one who does not serve him.”
L: This is the Word of the Lord
C: Thanks be to God

Psalm 95:1-7(a)
1 Come, let us sing | to the Lord;*
let us shout for joy to the Rock of | our salvation.
2 Let us come before his presence | with thanksgiving*
and raise a loud shout to | him with psalms.
3 For the Lord is | a great God,*
and a great King a- | bove all gods.
4 In his hand are the caverns | of the earth,*
and the heights of the hills are | also his.
5 The sea is his, | for he made it,*
and his hands have molded | the dry land.
6 Come, let us bow down, and | bend the knee,*
and kneel before the | Lord our Maker.

4

7 For he is our God, and we are the people of | his pasture*
and the sheep | of his hand.
All: Glory to the Father, and to the + Son, and to the | Holy Spirit,
As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be fore- | ver, Amen.

The Second Reading: Colossians 1:13-20
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the
kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all
things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him.
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the
head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in
everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased
to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in
heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

  • The Holy Gospel: Luke 23:27-43

27 There followed {Jesus} a great multitude of the people and of women who were
mourning and lamenting for him. 28 But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For
behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren and the
wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin to
say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do these
things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” 32 Two others, who
were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 And when they came to
the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on
his right and one on his left. 34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know
not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. 35 And the people stood
by, watching, but the rulers scoffed at him, saying, “He saved others; let him save
himself, if he is the Christ of God, his Chosen One!” 36 The soldiers also mocked him,
coming up and offering him sour wine 37 and saying, “If you are the King of the Jews,
save yourself!” 38 There was also an inscription over him, “This is the King of the
Jews.” 39 One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not
the Christ? Save yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not
fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed
justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done
nothing wrong.” 42 And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your
kingdom.” 43 And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in
paradise.”

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of
the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
True God from true God, begotten, not made,
Of one being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
    For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven;
By the power of the Holy Spirit,
He became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man.
    For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
He suffered death and was buried.
    On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
    He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
And his kingdom will have no end.

“What Is Christ the King Sunday?”

Christ the King Sunday is the final Sunday of the liturgical Church
Year. It is a day when we acknowledge & celebrate the true kingship
of our Lord Jesus Christ.

After seeing the rise of secularism & nationalism in Europe, Pope
Pius XI instituted the Feast of Christ the King in 1925 to remind the
universal Church of her true citizenship in the Kingdom of God.
Since then, other Christian traditions such as Lutherans, Anglicans,
Presbyterians, and Methodists have adopted this Feast Day to serve
the same purpose.

While we do well to honor & obey our President, our Governor, and
other authorities in the United States, Christ the King Sunday
reminds us of our ultimate allegiance: to King Jesus as the authority over our hearts (Colossians 3:15).

Welcome to our Visitors!
Grace Lutheran Church welcomes you this morning! We value families with children
and encourage you to worship together; if you would like assistance during the
sermon, we have volunteers who will be happy to take your child to a Nursery Area
following the Children’s Message, they will return your child to you in the sanctuary
just before Holy Communion. Please fill out a Visitor Connect card, these are found
either on the entrance table or in the pew rack in front of you. Completed cards
should be placed in the offering plate and will be collected with the offering today.
Sunday School
All are welcome to attend the adult Sunday School class before worship beginning at
8:45. We are currently studying Early Church History.
Holy Communion
Those who are baptized and believe that Jesus Christ, crucified and risen, is truly
present in the forms of bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation,
are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Please let the Pastor know that you wish to receive
this gift of life by holding out your open hands. If you desire to drink the wine from
the common cup, please proceed to the left chalice after receiving the wafer. If you
prefer to dip the wafer into the wine, please proceed to the right chalice after
receiving the wafer. You are encouraged to bring young children forward for a
blessing. The sign for a blessing is folded hands.
